FORUM: “WAQAFKAN GLC SEPERTI PETRONAS!”

I was extremely privileged, for the first time, to participate in an annual gathering of Asia-wide KFC and Pizza Hut franchisees held in Shanghai between 24-28 March, 2009. It was in the company of senior colleagues from Kulim, KFC and Pizza Hut as well as selected top performers from among Restaurant Managers all over the Group.
This was an occasion to celebrate success with all the passion, drama, colour, excitement and exhiliration. Such celebrations are famous and well known hallmarks of the KFC and Pizza Hut corporate culture, and the atmosphere was simply electric and unbelievably empowering!
I was indeed extremely proud, on this occasion, to be called upstage to represent all my colleagues to receive, on behalf of KFC Malaysia, the coveted “Tiger Award” for 2008 from YUM International (Asia) given away by CEO Mr Art Rautio.

Issues Raised at BizJihad Lecture Circuit - UniKL City Campus, 6th June, 2009.
(An edited version of this article was published in The Edge Malaysia, July 20, 2009, under the heading: “Business jihad for all”)
At the end of a talk I gave to a group of business students (and Malaysia’s future entrepreneurs among them) at UniKL City Campus on the subject of Business Jihad, as usual, many interesting questions were raised. Among those that I would like to discuss under FORUM was a question raised by Dinesh, a non Muslim student.
Dinesh, understandably, was under the impression that the call for Business Jihad implies exclusivity to Malays and Muslims, and hence not inclusive of others. In other words Dinesh was concerned about Business Jihad’s apparently “Islamic” agenda, that to him seemed to imply an uncaring or even a discriminatory attitude towards non Malay and non-Muslim interests and the problems and challenges faced by them.
Dinesh posed six other questions as well, and given the time constraint (not to mention the many other questions raised by other students that I had to respond to), I was quite positive that my quick reply to Dinesh had not satisfactorily and fully addressed all of his concerns. Hence I have taken this opportunity to expand upon the extremely important issue raised by Dinesh. I am positive that similar concerns would arise in the minds of other non-Muslim friends and visitors to this Blog (and I will not be surprised if they are also of concern to many Muslims as well!).

A JOURNEY TO BURSA AND ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Between 17th and 24th December 2008, I had the privilege of visiting Istanbul and Bursa, Turkey, in the company of several senior colleagues from JCorp. It was indeed one of our most interesting and meaningful journeys together, one that also had direct relevance and tremendous significance to JCorp’s greater Business Jihad corporate journey.
Top of our agenda, other than accepting an invitation to address a group of scholars and students at the Fatih University on the subject of Business Jihad and JCorp’s Corporate Waqaf, was to acquaint ourselves first hand with Turkey’s rich and glorious past. Our interest was especially regarding the role of Waqaf as a powerful religious and social institution that had been successfully adopted and adapted by the Turkish Islamic Caliphate over centuries in their effort to translate Islamic teachings and way of life into reality. Along with the application of superior Turkish military and governmental prowess, religious institutions such as Jihad and Waqaf had contributed greatly towards the building of a prosperous, powerful civilisational force - that had transformed peoples and greatly impacted on history.
The Turkish Islamic Empire had indeed been one of the most successful Islamic powers and one of the world’s longest lasting empires that had ruled and dominated world affairs for more than 600 years from 1300 onwards.

The Business Jihad Blog intends to provide a platform for more interaction and dialogue with visitors and to activate interaction and meaningful dialogue, two new columns will be introduced. Hopefully these two new columns will generate new interest on the importance of realising fully the aims and objectives of Business Jihad in elevating the state of the ummah.
The first is this “FORUM” column that will focus on current issues relating to matters that are relevant to the Business Jihad cause of reforming the state of affairs of the ummah and rediscovering the Muslim ummah’s long lost dynamism, especially in today’s business-driven global economic system. Visitors are encouraged, as we go along, to submit their own subjects or areas of interest that they regard as critical to improving the economic position of the ummah.
